Nora Curiston: Listening to the River — an installation with paintings, sculpture and sound

River Deep
acrylic on canvas, 2001
51 x 54 in.

Nora’s studio is within a few feet of the Kettle River and close to the junction of the Granby River in Grand Forks. Their powerful presence provided an initial inspiration. In a statement about her work, Nora has recently remarked: “.... this show has proved an exploration for me on several levels. I thought I knew the rivers intimately — that this exhibition would simply be the expression of my already fully formed ideas and concepts. However, once I began to work I found my new ‘looking at’ and ‘listening to’ the rivers constantly opening up new levels of appreciation. Each season brought its own colour and flavour to the rivers and their moods.

The second area of exploration was the act of art making itself. Over the months of preparation I found my style changing so dramatically that the only thread now looping the show together is the river itself and its sense of perpetual change.

And finally, the study of the human spirit forever fuels my art”.

Nora Curiston has been a practicing artist, largely self-taught, for the past ten years. She lives in Grand Forks, and is a part time diploma student at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver.
